Divorce conflict: You can work through it

On Behalf of | Oct 4, 2018 | Divorce |

A divorce isn’t easy for most people, and the likelihood is that there will be some difficulties that come up with yours. It’s likely that you and your spouse will have some disagreements, but if you’re willing to work together, you can get through them. If not, you both can go to trial and have a judge determine what happens with your divorce, but that is usually not the best option for anyone involved.

You and your spouse may not be sure how to work with each other during a divorce, especially because you are separating. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t options or that you can’t be civil with one another.

How can you be civil with your spouse during divorce?

The first thing to remember is that you have the ability to excuse yourself from a conversation that is becoming heated. If you feel that you are becoming too emotional and aren’t thinking clearly, it is in your best interests to walk away for a short time and gather your thoughts. This is best for everyone, and it should be something that is encouraged.

Once you feel more comfortable talking about the cause of the dispute, you can sit back down with your spouse and talk it out. If there is no way that can happen, you may wish to have your attorney directly address the problem with your spouse or your spouse’s attorney.

Another thing that you can do is work through a mediator. With a mediator present, there is always a third party in the room with you. That is massively beneficial because people often don’t act as negatively when there are other professionals present. Mediation is also beneficial because the mediator has information that can better educate you and your spouse on the best solutions to your problems.
