What’s the true divorce rate in America?

On Behalf of | Jun 29, 2021 | Divorce |

You may have heard that roughly half of the marriages in America end in divorce. However, this statistic is considered to be highly misleading among various groups that have studied divorce trends in Illinois and throughout the country. This is because studies don’t take into account data from all 50 states, and each state has its own method of calculating its divorce rate.

Divorce rates have been trending downward

According to the 2019 American Community Survey, there were 14.9 divorces for every 1,000 marriages recorded in the United States, which was the lowest since 1970. As a general rule, researchers agree that the divorce rate has been in a steady decline since the 1980s following a surge in the 1970s. In recent decades, divorce rates have been highest among those who were born between the years of 1946 and 1964.

You shouldn’t worry about national trends

Those who study divorce trends say that you are the one who defines whether your marriage is a success or failure. In fact, for some people, a marriage can be seen as a successful one even if it ends in divorce. Researchers note that the concept of marriage for younger people is drastically different than it was for those who got married during the 20th century. Therefore, it can be difficult to determine if historical data can be used to determine the outcome of a modern relationship. If you do decide to end your marriage, a family law attorney may be able to help you do so.

Ending a marriage may take a toll on your mental and financial health. However, an attorney may be able to help you obtain the resources needed to overcome these issues and live a comfortable lifestyle as a single individual.
