Can the love of money ruin a marriage?

On Behalf of | Jul 22, 2024 | Divorce |

Money is one of the most frequent issues in any marriage. A spouse’s admiration for money could also lead to marital strain. If couples do not work out their issues about money, then it could lead to divorce.

Here are a few examples of how a spouse’s focus on money may lead to issues in a marriage:

Does your spouse spend more time at work than with you?

A marriage often requires a lot of time spent together building up the relationship. This may mean going on frequent romantic dates or just spending casual time together doing hobbies. If your spouse spends a lot of time working to make money, they may be neglecting your marriage. As a result, you may feel resentful that they are not spending more time with you.

Do you and your spouse agree on investments?

You likely have a joint savings account with your spouse. How this savings is used may lead to conflict. For example, one spouse may want to focus on building up savings and investing them into stocks or bonds to build up capital. However, the other spouse may want to spend the savings at every chance they get. The difference in how the savings are used may lead to frustration.

Are you a stay-at-home spouse?

Your spouse may be the breadwinner while you stay home to focus on upkeep or caring for your children. The money your spouse makes could influence what you can and can not do. If your spouse does not let you spend money on your own, you may feel the need to regain autonomy in your life.

Legal representation can provide you with asset protection options if you file for divorce.
