Divorce conflicts: Getting through to your ex

It is hard to deal with conflicts when a relationship is over. You may not want to see your ex-spouse, and it may be your priority to put any conflict to rest as quickly as you can. You just want to finalize the divorce, so you can move on with your life.

You’re not alone in feeling that way. Many people get frustrated with conflicts that arise due to trouble coming up with a separation or settlement agreement. If this sounds familiar, then you may want to look into a few options to resolve your disputes.

The primary option for people struggling with disputes during divorce is to go through divorce mediation. This is a private session held with a third-party mediator. You and your ex-spouse will sit together to talk through any disputes you have. The mediator is there to provide you with knowledge and to prevent a breakdown in communication.

Conflicts can create a rift, and that may mean you’re not willing to work together to find a resolution. If you and your ex-spouse can’t be in a room together, mediation won’t be an option. Instead, you may want to try arbitration. Arbitration consists of a third-party arbitrator who reviews both sides of the dispute and makes a decision. This is binding in most cases, putting an end to the dispute.

Litigation is another option, but it is normally the most expensive and time-consuming. Consider how you want to move forward carefully so that you know you’re making the right choice for your finances and the resolution of your divorce.
