Your mental health and divorce

On Behalf of | Jan 1, 2024 | Divorce |

During and after a divorce in Illinois, you could encounter various issues that could impact your mental health. Without the proper treatment and support, these could also negatively impact your physical well-being.

Loneliness

One of the most common issues that can arise from a divorce is loneliness. You might feel you lack family support or that your children don’t want to spend as much time with you. Friends and family who were once there might seem distant until they learn more about what happened or until they determine who they want to talk to and spend time with, especially if they were close to one person more than the other.

Anxiety

Whether you’re in the beginning stages of a separation or you’ve already signed the divorce papers, you could experience anxiety throughout the day. Various tasks could be difficult to perform. You could think that other people are talking about you or performing actions that could negatively impact your life, such as requesting a child support order or taking out a restraining order. These thoughts can make it difficult to complete daily tasks like cleaning or caring for your family.

Getting Help

There are various ways that you can get help with mental issues that arise from a divorce. A therapist can listen and offer advice and can sometimes prescribe medications. You can also talk with family and friends about how you feel and what you can do to move on from the relationship.

The divorce process might not be something that you planned or expected. However, with relaxation and calm thinking, you can get through some of the mental issues that could arise.
